SNE and MNI welcomes the Commission Notice of the classification of Food for Special Medical Purposes (FSMPs) to ensure EU harmonization of the scope and definition of the category

Specialised Nutrition Europe (SNE) and Medical Nutrition International Industry (MNI) have been following the ongoing European Commission work on the preparation of the Notice on the classification of FSMPs, published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 25th November (2017/C 401/01).

In particular, SNE and MNI participated in the Working Group meeting of the Advisory Group held on 12 April 2017, aiming at gathering stakeholders’ views on this Commission Notice prior to its publication. Both SNE and MNI appreciated the opportunity to contribute to this consultation led bythe European Commission and welcome the intention of the Notice to ensure EU harmonisation on the definition and scope of FSMPs.

In addition, SNE and MNI welcome that the Commission Notice reflects the diverse nature of FSMPs formulated to meet the nutritional needs arising from a wide range of medical conditions that affect patients of all ages from infancy to old age; and subsequently leave some room for future innovation in respect of new product formulations and presentations, as well as new diseases, disorders or medical conditions that may benefit from nutritional intervention and dietary management using FSMP.

SNE and MNI will monitor progress of the implementation of the Notice on the classification of FSMPs.
