SNE publishes detailed guidance of Meal replacement for weight control

Specialised Nutrition Europe (SNE), representing manufacturers of specialised nutrition across Europe, released today a guidance document to provide Food Business Operators with information and clarity about the recent EU regulatory changes for Meal Replacements for Weight Control.

Following the repeal of the former EU legislation governing these products [i] and the entry into force of the new EU rules on Foods for Specific Groups [ii]Meal Replacements for Weight Control are now covered by the general EU food law, and particularly the Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation.

President of SNE Roger Clarke states: “The guidance document released today provides concrete advice to Food Business Operators on practical aspects of the implementation of the new rules, covering both labelling and composition requirements. We hope that this guidance will allow manufacturers to navigate these changes as smoothly as possible, and help them to continue to provide reliable and safe nutrition for European consumers willing to lose or maintain weight.”

To help Food Business Operators adapt smoothly to the new compositional criteria and labelling requirements, a 3-year transition period was established. Manufacturers therefore have to comply with the new rules by 14 September 2019, although products placed on the market or labelled before this date can still be exhausted.
